Stage 2: Starting the Dream

Now that we have our barn/trailer to live in, it is time to start building. The beauty of the semi-arid landscape of yuccas, cactus and shrubs is what drew us to the southwest. It is sad to have to destroy part of this landscape to make room for septic tanks, driveways, the house and workshop.
At first there is a lot of directing (yelling) to construction operators (including Grant) not to hurt the plants, but there would have been yuccas sticking up through the floor of the house had they listened. We try to work around as many yuccas and larger cactus as we can, leaving little islands of vegetation that can be worked into a natural landscape once the building is complete.

The Driveway is Built

After 70 tons (about 3 truck loads of gravel) being delivered, the gravel has to be spread out over the driveway using both the tractor and a lot of elbow grease.

Putting in the Main Septic System

A large tractor is brought in to dig about 7 feet down to put in the septic tanks. The first picture shows the septic and leech pipes, while the second picture shows Debie 'helping' to cover the septic and pipes with dirt.

 Clearing the Work Site

In addition Grant uses his toy (tractor) to cut out the driveway and semi-level the sites for the house and the workshop. The first picture shows the septic filled in, while the second picture shows Grant inspecting the house site.

Grant proudly surveys our land from the mountain of dirt that has to be removed from the work site.

Building the Boxing for the Foundation

planned.                                                   by hand, with the help of Jack..

Everyone gets their turn at digging the perimeter trenches for the footings (as Jack helps). It is hard work with the trenches being a foot wide and two feet deep AND having to go around the entire inside perimeter of the house. As Grant builds the boxing, the unevenness of the site is clear with one side almost ground level and the other side three feet high.

After the trenches are dug the arduous task of putting in the rebars (reinforcing iron bars) begins. The reinforcement bars have to go around the entire perimeter of the house. The second picture above shows the bottom of the trenches where the bars are secured. The last picture shows a not-to-happy Grant who has spent days bending and cutting rebars, bent over trenches wiring them together and holding them in place with wooden stakes.

In the next phase of development,
Grant gets some much needed help from a welcome source ...
